Jirí Anderle was born in 1936 in the town of Pavlikov in Bohemia in
the former Czechoslovacian Republic. His father was a craftsman, a black-smith, which he
lost at the age of six.
His drawing-teacher at the local school recommended him to try the admission-test for the
Art and Craftschool in Prague, which he did and passed. During 1951 to ´55 he studied at
the State Graphical-school in Prague and thereafter until 1961 at the Academy of Arts in
Prague. During 1961 to ´69 he worked and travelled with the Black Theatre in Prague at
stage setting and designing. During the travels with the theatre-group he became
acquainted with international art and developed his skills. His first foreign exhibition
was in 1967 in Göttingen in Germany. |

Jirí Anderle models are frequently related to his past.
In spite of his upbringing in the beautiful landscape of Bohemia, his models are usually
not related to the Bohemian landscape, but to the landscape of the human face with varying
emotional expressions.
A good example of this is the miniature to the right of an old woman in the picture old events, which might express different
emotional events in the past. |

Another example of facial expression is the oil painting titled grandmother and child, where both faces are
filled with excitement and fear. A motive from landscape is seen in the painting four seasons, remembrance from home. Here lowest,
a characteristic model by Jirí Anderle can be seen with faces through
time - an expression of the aging process. Another example of this is a part of the
painting "Fragrance" from 1983, which is shown to the right. |

Medieval Italian painting has frequently been a model in Jirí Anderle
work. An example of this is the boy with the
basket, which reminds you of Caravaggios "Bacchus". Another example has the
title Cranach
after the famous Italian painter.
The minutely formed figures like to the right in parts of the Utz reminds you of
work by old Italian masters like Leonardo Da Vinci. Being able to make this clarity with
the dry needle graphic technique is a fantastic achievement.Work by Jirí
Anderle is shown in many of the major galleries and museums in the world. His
name is, however, still infrequently found in world art dictionaries. With regard to his
work, this will certainly be changed in the future.
